Here are some examples of lighting positions using a single source (in this case, a hand-held flash unit).
  direct and frontal (yuk)
  overhead and frontal (notice the accentuated features)
  bounced off ceiling, a very large source (softened features)
  frontal, bounced off a large source (looks quite flat and dull)
  direct source, one quarter to the right side
  direct source, one quarter to the left side, fill bounced from other side (notice shadow on wall is softer than in the previous shot)
  direct source, one half to the side
  direct source, three quarters behind, natural fill in front (model getting bored at this point)
